With a dark atmosphere crafted by hissing, oscillating synth lines and the resulting layered swells, and an existential lust defining its melodies, this collaboration of art history and surrealistic interpretation provides a treat for the curious and dream-stricken. MtM+T’s most gripping vocal highlights build around lines that appear in increasing layers, Amaya's full and classically angelic voice shimmering with a hymnal reverence and sorrow. Cozy up and drift away.

This stunning release is at once transcendent and eerie. It’s a phantasmagoric trip into the life of Remedios Varo, a surrealist painter. This reminds me much of the spiritual works of Hildegard of Bingen, who also touched upon feverish visions for both her visual art and her music. All of this is captured in waves of organ, miscellaneous keyboards, hushed vocals, and guitars, leaving one with a sense of the holy and haunted. A brilliant and unsettling release.

Record/Vinyl + Digital Album
This is the limited edition lathe cut record version in an edition of only 42 copies. In keeping with the surrealist concept of this album, each of these has a unique, hand assembled analog collage on the front of its recycled, kraftboard jacket, each composed from cut and torn duotone prints from a 75 year old portfolio of beautiful theatrical photographs from the obscure French photographer, Thérèse Le Prat. On the back of the jacket is an attached, fold open page from a 100 year old world atlas that has had the album credits and info printed on it, and has been "embroidered" on a sewing machine with red thread, after first having been modified by hand with rubber stamps. Each clear record comes in a plastic inner sleeve, and an outer clear poly sleeve. The records have been cut by hand at Bladud Flies in Wales, UK.

Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album
This is the Limited Edition CD version of this release in an edition of only 40 copies. Each copy comes in a vintage 35mm metal film can. The cover has an attached hi-res print of one of the original collages that come on the lathe cut record jacket versions of this release, and inside are another four rounded versions of more of these collages, one of which has been embroidered with red thread. The cans also contain a vintage black cat bookplate that has been typed on by hand, transparent rounded pieces from antique x-rays, a sheet of sandpaper attached at the bottom, with another image buffed onto it, some yellow netting, a uniquely different hand drawn and colored, strange figurative drawing from an anonymous artist, and the CD itself in a cotton sleeve. Around the edge of the can is a black, titled plastic strip that has been hand punched out on an old Dymo-mite Tapewriter. On the back of each can is a hand stamped print from an old X-ray book.

Bordando el manto terrestre (Embroidering the Earth's Mantle) is a musical journey around the figure of Remedios Varo, a painter born in Spain in 1908, who lived in exile in Mexico until her death in 1963. This journey begins with an ocean-like motion; driven by the ruin of war and exile, and follows, in Mexico, with the construction of a new intimate space flooded with light and wonder. This is a path of fantasy inhabited by captive moons, weavers of the cosmos and human gardens, and one in which to recover lost harmony and place ourselves in the world again.

"Deploying strings, piano, synthesizers, field recordings and of course Amaya Lopez-Carromero’s voice, the album moves back and forth from undulating and elegiac to anthemic and brilliant, evoking the dream-like visions of Varos and the surrealistic style in which she worked. The sonic palette is heavy on the duo’s native instruments, voice, organ, and piano for Lopez-Carromero, an array of synthesizers for trajedesaliva’s Mon Ninguen. Together they weave a layered space full of mystery and yearning. Bordando is a fascinating, dramatic interpretation of what music inspired by the life and work of an artist can sound like." - A Closer Listen (Jennifer Smart)

Having followed David for a while, I must say he never ceases to intrigue, in the best possible way. It's uncanny how he has almost reinvented folk music by applying modern tropes with traditional instruments. Alongside of all of this are field recordings which give a sense of locale and ancient history to his works.

Landing somewhere between early Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream, and Klaus Schulze, this is beautifully unusual music, packed with atmosphere with a quirky concept. I'd love to hear more of this. Bravo. John Stott
